Kim Faler is an artist who believes in close looking: she explores the extraordinary qualities lurking in everyday objects and materials, and marks as her own the terrain of the mundane. Her fascination lies in investigating how an artist can magnify and manipulate the physical properties of an object in ways that make the familiar seem truly uncanny.
Faler plays with perceptions of depth, authenticity, veracity, and illusion by replacing concrete objects with expertly hand-crafted simulacra that she fabricates from paper, wood, or other unexpected materials. Through installations, photographs, sculptures, and drawings, Faler hones in on the spaces between the seen and unseen that we take for granted on a daily basis: the accumulative rings a coffee cup leaves on a table morning after morning, or the all-enveloping decorative patterns of ceramic bathroom tiles or wallpaper. She also knows just how to create subtle tricks of trompe l’oeil by juxtaposing three-dimensional forms with those that she draws two-dimensionally.
